چکیده

purpose: to report the clinical and histopathological features of recurrent atypical fibrous histiocytoma of the corneo-scleral limbus followed by intra-epithelial squamous neoplasia. case report: a 25-year-old female patient presented with a recurrent vascularized gelatinous mass in the left nasal limbus. the preliminary histopathological diagnosis of the previously excised lesion was an amelanotic malignant melanoma at a private general pathology center. the lesion had recurred after one year and the histopathologic diagnosis was a poorly differentiated malignant melanoma at another pathology center. the lesion recurred again and the specimen was sent to a third histopathologic center where the histopathologic diagnosis revealed spindle cell growth with moderate atypia. a pannus-like lesion occurred in the nasal limbus 3 years later which was excised and sent to the eye bank pathology laboratory. reviewing the slides related to the first recurrent lesion and the histopathologic examination of the recently excised specimen disclosed a final diagnosis of atypical fibrous histiocytoma and intra-epithelial squamous neoplasia, respectively. conclusion: fibrous histiocytoma is a rare limbal tumor that may have atypical features and can be misdiagnosed as an amelanotic melanoma. this is also a rare report on the occurrence of intraepithelial squamous neoplasia following excision of recurrent fibrous histiocytoma.

Atypical Cutaneous Fibrous Histiocytoma: An Unusual and Misleading Variant of Fibrous Histiocytoma

Atypical fibrous histiocytoma is a distinctive variant of cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma, which is often mistaken histologically for sarcoma and which have a tendency to recur locally and a capacity to metastasize, although very rarely. We report a new case of atypical cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma in a 31-year-old man who presented with a recurrent polypoid nodule on the abdominal wall. The d...

In vivo volumetric imaging of the human corneo-scleral limbus with spectral domain OCT

The limbus is the structurally rich transitional region of tissue between the cornea on one side, and the sclera and conjunctiva on the other. This zone, among other things, contains nerves passing to the cornea, blood and lymph vasculature for oxygen and nutrient delivery and for waste, CO(2) removal and drainage of the aqueous humour. In addition, the limbus contains stem cells responsible fo...

In vivo microstructural and microvascular imaging of the human corneo-scleral limbus using optical coherence tomography

The corneo-scleral limbus contains several biological components, which are important constituents for understanding, diagnosing and managing several ocular pathologies, such as glaucoma and corneal abnormalities. An anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) system integrated with optical microangiography (OMAG) is used in this study to non-invasively visualize the three-dimensiona...

Atypical fibrous histiocytoma and atypical fibroxanthoma: presentation of two cases.

We report two rare examples of dermal fibrohistiocytic stromal tumors: one case of atypical fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) and another one of atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), which can be confused in surgical pathology diagnosis with high-grade malignant neoplasm. Histologically, a proliferation of mononuclear, spindle-shaped, or histiocytoid cells and/or multinucleated cells, usually admixed with inf...

Recurrent Painful Perianal Subcutaneous Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare, lowgrade malignant soft-tissue tumor most commonly occurring in the extremities of children and young adults and has a low potential of local recurrence and metastasis. Here, we present a case of recurrent subcutaneous perianal AFH. After an initial diagnosis as a sebaceous cyst, we were able to use immunohistochemical findings to correctly iden...

Recurrent Massive Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of Maxilla—A Rare Case Recurrent Massive Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of Maxilla—A Rare Case

We present a case of recurrent extensive malignant fibrous histiocytoma of maxilla. The case is unusual because of its massive extent at presentation even after primary surgery and full course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Even such massive tumor can be excised successfully. Primary malignant histiocytoma is rare; and such huge tumor at presentation is also rare and favorable outcome even
